Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has received a multi-year grant from the Gates Foundation to establish a nationally coordinated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in Pakistan, according to an official announcement.
The initiative will initially concentrate on maternal, newborn, and child health, an area facing persistent challenges in the country. The hub is being developed in collaboration with Aga Khan University (AKU), combining advanced AI research with clinical expertise to develop practical healthcare solutions.
LUMS will lead work on artificial intelligence, language technologies, and digital health systems, while AKU will support clinical validation, contribute health data, and assist in testing solutions across care settings.
Dr Maryam Mustafa, Associate Professor of Computer Science at LUMS, said: “We are launching this hub with maternal, newborn, and child health because this is where the need is most urgent and the opportunity for immediate impact is greatest.”
The platform aims to create AI-driven tools for early risk detection, improved diagnosis, and better continuity of care, while also supporting collaboration between policymakers, researchers, and healthcare professionals.
