Apple is eyeing Pakistan for iPhone manufacturing and refurbishment under a new incentives framework. Officials project $100m in re-export revenue as localisation targets accelerate.
Apple Inc. is preparing to begin iPhone manufacturing in Pakistan under the proposed Mobile and Electronics Manufacturing Framework, according to The Express Tribune, citing Engineering Development Board (EDB) officials.
EDB CEO Hamad Ali Mansoor said the company will initially refurbish two- to three-year-old iPhones for re-export, with projected first-year revenue of $100 million from refurbished device exports. Apple has sought discounted land, an 8% performance incentive, and policy support — measures incorporated into the framework pending approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Mansoor noted that Apple adopted a similar phased approach in Indonesia, Malaysia, and India, beginning with repairs before transitioning to manufacturing.
The government currently offers a 6% incentive to mobile manufacturers, with plans to raise it to 8%. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan has endorsed the initiative.
Officials expect $557 million in Chinese investment and aim to raise local component use from 12% to 35% in the first year, targeting 50% thereafter.
