Meta is facing a class action lawsuit over alleged #copyright #infringement and unfair #competition in training its AI models, including LLaMA. Court documents suggest the company downloaded 81.7TB of pirated data from sources like Anna’s Archive, Z-Library, and LibGen.

Internal #emails show concerns within Meta. In October 2022, an AI researcher said, “I don’t think we should use pirated material.” Another compared these sites to #PirateBay. Despite objections, a meeting in January 2023, attended by Mark Zuckerberg, reportedly pushed forward the use of such data.

By April 2023, #employees worried about using #corporate #IP addresses to access pirated content. The lawsuit claims Meta took steps to hide its #involvement.

This case is part of a wider #legal trend. In 2023, OpenAI and NVIDIA were sued for using copyrighted books and videos to #train AI. The New York Times also took legal action.

The lawsuit against Meta is ongoing. If found #liable, the company will likely appeal, delaying any final ruling. The outcome could have lasting #effects on AI training #practices and #copyright laws in the tech industry.
