The Jazz Smart School program has been nominated for an International CSR Excellence award and separately for a Global Good Award! Winners are announced over the next month. The program improved digital skills and literacy among 25,000 school girls and 600 teachers in Pakistan in the past year alone.
The nominations follow the launch of VEON’s latest Sustainability Report. The report details the positive impact the company is having on local communities across their 10 operating countries.
The past year was hugely successful for VEON’s Sustainability program. The program focuses on fostering digital entrepreneurs and encouraging greater digital skills and literacy.
In 2018:
• 652 technology start-ups were supported through various hackathons, incubators and accelerators supported
• 125,800 learners enrolled in their digital literacy and smart school initiatives
• 475 solar and wind-powered base stations were installed and the company decreased its network emissions by 56% (per unit of data traffic)
Not only is their sustainability programme good for local communities, but it also makes good business sense. For example, in Ukraine, one of Kyivstar’s schemes was a school for aspiring data scientists which helped the community in general as well as providing Kyivstar with a pipeline of much needed Ukrainian talent.
