The Ministry of Energy Power Division announced Friday a nationwide smart meter rollout across electricity distribution companies, declaring 2025-26 as the Year of Customer Service Improvement. Power Division spokesperson Zafaryab Khan revealed that strategic interventions reduced single-phase smart meter prices from Rs20,000 to approximately Rs15,000, creating estimated annual savings of Rs25 billion based on 5 million meter replacements yearly.
With 38 million electricity consumers nationwide and 80 percent using single-phase connections, this cost reduction makes advanced metering technology more accessible. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif previously demanded smart meter installation after criticizing overbilling by power utility companies.
The comprehensive digitalization initiative by Discos aims to provide real-time data availability, transparency, remote meter reading capabilities, enhanced billing accuracy, faster complaint resolution, real-time outage detection, and improved operational management. The Power Division emphasized this marks a significant milestone in digitalizing Pakistan’s power sector and represents a crucial component of the Government of Pakistan’s ongoing power sector reform agenda.
