The Pakistani government has issued its first blockchain-based computing license to a local data center, marking a significant step in advancing the country’s digital infrastructure. This move aims to foster innovation in blockchain technology, enhance data security, and attract investment in high-performance computing sectors. Officials see it as a milestone toward integrating emerging technologies into national development plans.
The license was granted by the Special Technology Zones Authority – STZA, a government-led body, with support from major institutions such as the Ministry of IT and Telecom and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The high-performance computing (HPC) project integrates Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data technologies and is projected to attract significant investment while generating an estimated $1.5 to $2 million in annual foreign exchange.
Initially powered by 7 megawatts of electricity, the data center aims to provide an innovative use for Pakistan’s surplus energy capacity. According to sources, incorporating blockchain will improve transparency and security in digital operations. Government’s officials have described the project as a “revolutionary initiative” and a pivotal step toward strengthening Pakistan’s digital ecosystem and economic diversification.
