Meta has signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to secure nuclear power from the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois, reflecting Big Tech’s growing reliance on stable, carbon-free energy for AI data centers. The deal, starting in 2027, will replace state subsidies for the plant and ensure its continued operation. Meta will receive 1,121 megawatts of nuclear energy for its regional operations, with an additional 30 megawatts fed into the local grid.
This move underscores the tech industry’s increasing demand for reliable electricity to support AI growth. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are also investing in nuclear energy as they expand energy-intensive infrastructure. Meta emphasized nuclear’s role in meeting future power needs while advancing clean energy goals. As AI use accelerates, the International Energy Agency warns that data center electricity demand may more than double by 2030, pushing firms to secure long-term, sustainable energy solutions.
