Meta has appointed Shengjia Zhao, one of the co-creators of ChatGPT and GPT-4, as the chief scientist of its new Superintelligence Lab. Announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the move signals Meta’s ambition to compete at the highest level in advanced artificial intelligence research.
Zhao previously worked at OpenAI, where he played a key role in building ChatGPT and several of its follow-up models. At Meta, he will work directly with Zuckerberg and Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang to set the scientific direction for the Superintelligence Lab. This new lab is separate from FAIR, Meta’s existing AI research division led by AI pioneer Yann LeCun.
Meta launched the Superintelligence Lab to consolidate its Llama models and long-term AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) goals. Zhao is not just leading it, he’s also a co-founder of the lab. This is part of Meta’s recent hiring spree, which has seen several high-profile AI researchers join from OpenAI and other rival firms.
Zuckerberg stated the company aims to build “full general intelligence” and release it as open source. A bold strategy that has sparked both praise and concern in the AI community.
