After ten years away, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has declared its return to Pakistan and unveiled €160 million in funding for water infrastructure projects and housing rebuilding.
The funding package includes €60 million for water supply and water quality initiatives in Karachi and €100 million for towns in Sindh threatened by flooding.
The Sindh-focused component, according to officials, will aid in the rehabilitation of displaced populations through extensive housing repair projects in the wake of the 2022 floods.
In order to increase access to clean drinking water, the funds will support the development of water infrastructure projects in Karachi, such as filtration facilities at Gharo and Pipri. It is anticipated that the initiatives will increase resistance to climate-related disasters including heat waves and floods.
The funding is supported by guarantees from the European Union under the Global Gateway initiative, the EU’s international infrastructure investment program, and was unveiled during the EU-Pakistan Business Forum.
The project represents the EIB’s return to Pakistan after almost a decade and shows how Pakistan and European organisations are still working together on infrastructure, climate resilience, and urban development initiatives.
