PTA has conditionally approved the rebranding of the merged Ufone-Telenor operation, subject to completion of legal formalities. The proposed identity is “e&”.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has conditionally approved the proposed rebranding of the merged Ufone-Telenor mobile operation, according to sources cited by ProPakistani. The approval is subject to the completion of all required legal formalities before the new identity can be formally launched.
The regulatory development brings the merged operator closer to adopting a single brand identity, although the final launch date has not yet been confirmed. PTA sources also said the authority was unaware of any plan to hold a formal rebranding event on September 15 and had not received confirmation of such a date.
The merger of Ufone and Telenor Pakistan has been completed under Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), consolidating the companies’ spectrum resources, network infrastructure and customer base under one mobile operation. The combined business currently serves more than 74 million subscribers across Pakistan.
Following the completion of the merger, PTML management proposed replacing the existing Ufone and Telenor Pakistan identities with the global “e&” brand. The proposed rebranding would bring the two mobile operations under a unified commercial identity following their integration.
PTA’s conditional approval reportedly requires PTML to complete the necessary legal requirements and notify the regulator before launching any commercial or promotional campaign using the new identity. This means that the regulatory approval does not by itself constitute the final launch of the new brand.
The rebranding process had previously been delayed amid legal and corporate governance questions surrounding the approval procedure. The latest development addresses a key regulatory stage, while outstanding legal requirements still need to be completed before PTML can begin commercial activities under the proposed identity.
Despite “e&” being the proposed identity, PTML has not yet publicly confirmed that it will be the final brand name for the merged operation. The company has also yet to announce an official launch date or provide details of how the transition from the Ufone and Telenor Pakistan brands will take place.
The customer transition process is expected to be an important part of the rebranding, given the combined operator’s subscriber base of more than 74 million. However, details regarding changes to branding, customer communications, products or services have not yet been publicly disclosed.
For now, the rebranding remains subject to the completion of legal and regulatory formalities. PTML will need to notify PTA once those requirements have been fulfilled before proceeding with commercial or promotional activity under the new identity.
With the merger already completed, the proposed rebranding represents the next major step in consolidating the two operations. The final brand, launch date and transition arrangements will depend on PTML’s forthcoming formal announcement.
