Apple and OpenAI have asked a US federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, which accused them of blocking competition in artificial intelligence. Musk’s lawsuit, filed in August, alleged that Apple sidelined his X and Grok apps from its App Store due to a deal with OpenAI, and sought billions in damages.
In their filing, Apple and OpenAI said the agreement was not exclusive and that Apple is free to work with multiple providers. They argued that Musk’s claims fail to show real harm to competition. The partnership between Apple and OpenAI has already brought ChatGPT to iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
xAI has not responded to the dismissal request. Analysts believe the case could set an important precedent on how courts view agreements between major tech companies and whether such partnerships limit or encourage fair competition in the market.
