Anthropic is considering releasing a new AI model as OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra gains traction among businesses, while the company prepares for a potential IPO.
Anthropic is considering releasing a new artificial intelligence model as it faces increased competitive pressure from OpenAI following the launch of GPT-6 Astra, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Reuters.
The potential release comes as Anthropic prepares for an expected initial public offering (IPO) and shortly after CEO Dario Amodei called for the AI industry to slow the pace of developing new capabilities because of safety concerns.
Amodei wrote in a September 12 essay that AI companies should slow the pace at which they improve model capabilities. Anthropic is now evaluating the safety of its next model as part of discussions over whether and when to release it.
OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3, highlighting improvements in areas including computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity and professional work. The model has gained traction among enterprise users and developers, prompting some prospective Anthropic investors to reassess the competitive position of the two companies.
Data tracked by corporate expense platform Ramp showed Astra accounting for about 13% of enterprise AI spending, compared with around 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable. OpenRouter also reported that its users spent more on OpenAI models than Anthropic models in the latest week, marking the first time OpenAI had led on that measure in more than two and a half years, according to Reuters.
Despite the increased competition, Anthropic continues to report higher annualized revenue. Its revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion by the end of July, up from approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025. OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate passed $40 billion in July.
Anthropic is also weighing the cost of releasing new models against efforts to strengthen profitability. Rising interest rates and competition from open-source and open-weight AI models have increased investor focus on how quickly leading AI companies can generate sustainable cash flows.
The growing availability of open-source models could also allow businesses to develop and operate more AI systems internally, potentially reducing reliance on commercial providers.
Meta Platforms, one of Anthropic’s major customers, is reportedly looking to reduce its use of Anthropic models as it develops more AI capabilities internally.
Anthropic declined to comment on the potential model release.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said the company will not pursue an IPO in 2026, citing AI safety concerns. Anthropic’s IPO could also be delayed until after the November US midterm elections, according to people familiar with the matter.
