Information Commissioner’s Office’s investigating TikTok over its handling of children’s personal data. The inquiry focuses on how TikTok collects and uses data from users aged 13 to 17 to recommend content. Concerns include exposure to harmful material, privacy risks, and excessive screen time.
The ICO will also examine Reddit, Inc. and Imgur, particularly their age verification systems. The investigation aims to ensure compliance with UK data protection laws, including the Children’s Code, which limits the collection of minors’ data.
TikTok has stated that it enforces strict privacy measures for younger users. However, the probe follows a £12.7 million fine in 2023 for collecting data from children under 13 without parental consent. TikTok is appealing this decision.
Reddit claims 95% of its users are adults and says it is improving compliance. Imgur has not yet responded. The ICO warns that companies violating regulations could face fines.
This investigation is part of broader UK efforts to strengthen online child protection. New rules require platforms to enforce age restrictions and limit children’s exposure to inappropriate content. The inquiry is ongoing, and no final conclusions have been reached.
