In near future, you may have the option to buy a phone without a sim slot and no need for a physical SIM card (additional space for more gadgets in your phone). This has been made possible through the introduction of an embedded SIM card i.e. eSIM.

                      What is an eSIM?

The term “eSIM” is basically an embedded SIM card. There are no physical SIM cards involved and no physical swapping over required by you. eSIM needs to be supported by the network/carrier and enabled by the carrier of your choice.

The information on an eSIM is rewritable, meaning you can decide to change your operator with a simple phone call. eSims also make connecting devices to a mobile account easier. eSIM is backed by the GSMA, the association of mobile networks and that organization has defined the standard for eSIM worldwide.

Which networks are supporting eSIMs in Pakistan?

Among all the telcos in Pakistan, Jazz was the first operator to focus on the hyper-connected world by introducing eSIM management in Pakistan. At the moment, Jazz and Ufone have announced eSIM expertise designed for their consumers, but other mobile phone companies are expected to bring the backing in a little while. Jazz publicized its provision for eSIM initiation back in 2019, although Ufone has sprung eSIM sustenance in February 2021. Apple, iPhone, XS Max, XS, XR, Google XL Pixel 3, Pixel 3 stay amongst the sustained campaigns.

According to the GSM Association (GSMA), mobile connectivity will contribute a massive 4.8% of the world’s total GDP by the year 2023. This represents an economic value of roughly $4.8 trillion with 25.2 billion connections by 2025.

                      Which mobile phones support eSIM?

You can find a list of eSIM supported Android and iOS-based phones and devices here.
