Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk announced that the company’s large-scale artificial intelligence chip manufacturing initiative, known as the Terafab project, is expected to launch within the next seven days.
The project is part of Tesla’s broader strategy to strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure and support its autonomous driving ambitions. Musk had previously indicated that Tesla may need to build a “gigantic chip fab” to meet the growing demand for AI chips required to power its advanced vehicle technologies.
Tesla is currently developing its fifth-generation AI chip, designed to enhance the performance of its autonomous driving systems, including the Full Self-Driving software. The company has suggested that even the most optimistic supply projections from existing partners may not meet its long-term chip requirements.
Musk previously said Tesla could potentially collaborate with Intel for chip manufacturing, although no formal agreement has been confirmed.
Tesla has also been working with global semiconductor partners such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics for AI chip production.
The Terafab initiative reflects Tesla’s efforts to secure sufficient computing capacity as competition intensifies in autonomous vehicle and AI-driven technologies.
