PTA has warned users about fake calls, messages and links used to steal personal information and access online accounts. The authority urged people to verify contacts, avoid suspicious links and strengthen account security.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has cautioned internet users in Pakistan about scams involving fraudulent calls, messages and links designed to obtain personal information or gain unauthorised access to online accounts.
The warning was issued during Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2026, as the authority seeks to increase public awareness of phishing and social engineering tactics.
According to the PTA, scammers may pose as representatives of banks, companies or government departments to establish credibility. They can also use fake prize offers and deceptive messages to persuade people to disclose sensitive information or provide access to their accounts.
The authority advised users never to share one-time passwords (OTPs), personal identification numbers (PINs) or account passwords with others. Users were also urged to avoid clicking on unfamiliar or suspicious links and independently confirm the identity of anyone claiming to represent an institution.
PTA further recommended using strong and unique passwords for online accounts and enabling two-factor authentication as an additional security measure. Keeping devices and applications updated was also highlighted as an important step in reducing cybersecurity risks.
The authority encouraged users to limit the personal information they publish on online platforms, warning that publicly available details can potentially be exploited by scammers.
PTA urged internet users to remain cautious when receiving unexpected calls, messages or links and to verify information before taking any action. The awareness campaign is aimed at promoting safer online practices and reducing the risk of phishing and other forms of cybercrime.
