PTA has prescribed testing and compliance requirements for 5G devices and base stations, with accredited laboratory reports required for Certificates of Compliance.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has outlined technical testing and compliance requirements for 5G devices and base stations under the Telecommunication Equipment Standards Regulations, 2024.
The framework requires 5G New Radio (5G NR) equipment to undergo testing for radio-frequency transmission and reception, as well as applicable protocol requirements before the equipment can be used on Pakistan’s telecom networks.
For 5G user equipment, the prescribed standards address areas including radio performance, spectrum access and electromagnetic compatibility. Separate radio-conformance testing requirements have also been established for 5G NR base stations.
The regulations extend beyond fifth-generation technology and include technical requirements for equipment used with earlier mobile standards. These cover 2G, 3G and 4G technologies, including GSM, UMTS, LTE and CDMA2000 devices and network equipment.
The requirements apply to PTA licensees, telecommunications equipment manufacturers and importers operating within the relevant regulatory framework.
Companies seeking a Certificate of Compliance from the PTA will be required to provide test reports issued by accredited laboratories as part of the application process. The testing requirements are intended to verify that equipment meets the applicable technical specifications before being deployed on local networks.
By establishing technology-specific testing requirements for both user devices and network infrastructure, the framework provides a compliance process covering radio performance and other technical characteristics of telecommunications equipment.
The standards form part of the PTA’s regulatory framework for telecommunications equipment and are intended to ensure that devices and network equipment entering Pakistan’s market meet prescribed technical requirements.
