Pakistan and Finland are expanding economic cooperation in green finance, smart technologies, and trade. Finland’s expertise in sustainable finance and renewable energy presents opportunities for Pakistan to address its energy deficit and promote affordable, clean energy. Joint ventures in hydropower, wind energy, lithium batteries, and energy storage are under discussion.
Beyond energy, Finland’s strengths in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and digital infrastructure could benefit Pakistan’s industries. Sustainable forestry and energy efficiency are additional areas of collaboration. Experts also see Finland’s forest economy as a non-traditional sector for engagement.
Dr. Mehmoodul Hassan Khan highlighted growing cooperation in IT, telecommunications, healthcare, and construction. Many Pakistanis work in Finland’s economy, particularly in IT, manufacturing, and research, contributing remittances to Pakistan.
Vocational training is another key area. Finland’s Turku Vocational Institute is collaborating with Pakistan’s NUTECH, while the €1.5 million Vocational Talent Boost Programme supports skills development. Expanding educational ties in AI, robotics, and digitalization could further strengthen relations.
Pakistan’s exports to Finland stood at $31.38 million in FY24, with imports at $67.66 million in FY23. Experts stress the need to simplify visa processes and boost private sector engagement to drive trade and investment.
