The Government of Pakistan has approved a new electronics manufacturing policy aimed at promoting local production of a wide range of electronic products. Under the policy, Pakistan will manufacture mobile phones, laptops, tablets, computers and other devices including point of sale machines, biometric systems, smartwatches and tracking equipment.
Officials said the initiative is designed to reduce dependence on imported finished goods while strengthening the country’s industrial capacity. The policy also places emphasis on improving data security by encouraging local assembly and production of electronic devices used across sectors.
To discourage imports, the government has proposed levies ranging from one to five percent on imported electronic devices. At the same time, tax exemptions will be offered on raw materials used for local manufacturing to support domestic producers.
The policy is expected to create employment opportunities, lower prices for consumers over time and help conserve foreign exchange by reducing import bills. The initiative will contribute to long term industrial growth and greater self reliance in the electronics sector.
