Amazon, Google, Siemens Energy, and Meta are backing the ‘Large Energy Consumers Pledge’ to expand nuclear power. The pledge aims to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050. These companies recognize nuclear energy as vital for clean, reliable, and resilient power generation.
Lucia Tian, Head of Clean Energy at Google, expressed pride in supporting the pledge, highlighting nuclear’s role in providing steady, sustainable energy for the future. Meta’s Urvi Parekh also stressed the importance of nuclear energy for meeting the growing energy demands of a rapidly expanding global economy.
This initiative grew from the World Nuclear Symposium in 2023 and gained further support at COP28. By 2024, 31 countries and over 140 companies, including Allseas, Bureau Veritas Group, and Dow, had joined the movement. With nuclear power currently supplying only 9% of global electricity, the push for expansion is crucial.
Amazon has invested over $1bn in nuclear projects and supports small modular reactors (SMRs) for greater efficiency. Companies believe nuclear power is key to achieving sustainability and energy security.
