Committed to user data protection, Google has introduced “Identity Check,” a biometric authentication feature aimed at thwarting smartphone theft and safeguarding personal data. By requiring biometric verification, this function protects sensitive information even if the device is unlocked or its password compromised. Currently, the feature is being introduced on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices operating Android 15.
This security measure activates when a smartphone is taken outside trusted areas, requiring users to verify their identity to access critical accounts and settings. Trusted locations, such as home or work addresses, can be customized to suit individual needs. Notably, only devices equipped with Class 3 Biometrics—offering advanced three-dimensional facial recognition or ultrasonic fingerprint sensors—can leverage this feature.
To bolster protection, the device reverts to its primary authentication method (PIN, passcode, or pattern) after 72 hours. Class 3 Biometric systems are highly resistant to spoofing attempts, ensuring greater security with minimal chances of false acceptance or rejection.
In addition, “Identity Check” locks down features like “Find My Device” and PIN reset without biometric input, further deterring thieves. Complementing these efforts, Google has incorporated theft detection and offline device locking to aid users in safeguarding data during device loss or theft.
