Alibaba.com has introduced AI-powered solutions aimed at helping Pakistani small and medium enterprises (SMEs) expand their international reach, improve operational efficiency and connect with global buyers through digital trade platforms.
The announcement came during a meeting between a senior Alibaba.com delegation and Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, in Islamabad. Discussions focused on strengthening Pakistan’s digital economy, supporting industrial development and increasing the export potential of local businesses.
A key area of discussion was the implementation of the DigiSME Pakistan initiative in collaboration with Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA). The initiative is intended to equip Pakistani SMEs with digital tools and capabilities that can help them compete more effectively in international markets.
The Alibaba.com delegation, led by Shawn Yang, General Manager for the Asia-Pacific region, presented a range of digital and AI-driven solutions designed to support business growth. According to the company, these tools can help enterprises improve productivity, streamline operations and identify new opportunities in overseas markets.
During the meeting, Haroon Akhtar Khan highlighted the memorandums of understanding signed between the government and Alibaba Group during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent visit to China. He noted that Alibaba.com’s platform could play an important role in integrating Pakistani SMEs into global digital trade networks, helping businesses expand exports and generate new economic opportunities.
Alibaba representatives emphasised that Pakistani products have strong potential in international markets and can benefit from increased visibility through digital commerce platforms. The company also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in improving market access for exporters.
Shawn Yang noted that Alibaba.com’s AI-powered matching tools help connect sellers with relevant overseas buyers by identifying demand patterns and facilitating business opportunities across global markets. The technology is designed to improve the efficiency of cross-border trade and make it easier for SMEs to reach international customers.
The engagement reflects growing cooperation between Pakistan and global technology companies to accelerate digital transformation and support export-led growth. With SMEs accounting for a significant portion of Pakistan’s business landscape, stakeholders view digital commerce and AI-enabled solutions as important tools for enhancing competitiveness and expanding access to international markets.
The initiative is expected to support broader efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy while providing local businesses with new avenues for growth through technology-driven trade.
