OpenAI plans a desktop superapp combining its major AI tools. The move aims to streamline products amid growing competition.
OpenAI is reportedly developing a desktop “superapp” that will combine its key products into a single platform, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The planned application is expected to integrate ChatGPT, the Codex coding tool, and the Atlas AI browser, as part of a broader effort to streamline the company’s product ecosystem. The move follows internal concerns that having multiple standalone tools has affected efficiency and product quality.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, indicated in an internal communication that fragmentation had been slowing progress and making it harder to meet expected standards. She also emphasised the need to prioritise successful initiatives and reduce distractions.
The development comes as OpenAI faces intensifying competition from Anthropic, particularly after the growing adoption of its coding-focused tools. In response, the company appears to be narrowing its focus to strengthen its core offerings.
Simo later noted publicly that companies often alternate between experimentation and consolidation, adding that it is important to focus resources when certain products begin to gain traction. The mobile version of ChatGPT is not expected to be affected by these changes.
