Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive austerity and savings plan aimed at shielding the public from rising economic pressure caused by global tensions and energy market disruptions. The directive was issued during a high-level review meeting assessing Pakistan’s economic situation amid the current global environment.
The prime minister instructed the relevant committee to develop a strategy focused on economic growth, simplicity and fiscal discipline, with practical recommendations to be submitted within 48 hours. He emphasised that any policy response must prioritise public relief and ensure the financial burden on citizens remains minimal despite global price shocks.
Officials also briefed the meeting on the economic impact of regional tensions and recent increases in fuel prices. The committee informed the prime minister that adjustments to petroleum prices were made carefully to transfer the smallest possible burden to consumers while maintaining supply stability.
Shehbaz Sharif also directed the finance and petroleum ministries to coordinate with provincial governments to ensure fuel conservation and uninterrupted petroleum supply, while warning that petrol pumps involved in hoarding or artificial shortages should face strict legal action.
