From July 2024 to March 2025, mobile service providers in Pakistan, such as Jazz, Telenor, Zong CMPak Ltd, and Ufone 4G, collected Rs. 84.24 billion in taxes from the consumers. The tax was directly credited to the national exchequer, thus adding a big chunk to the revenue of the country. Moreover, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has enrolled 2.39 million new taxpayers as part of its recent tax reforms, which assisted in adding the number of tax filers to 6.59 million as of April 2025.
Other significant issues were also discussed in the session of the National Assembly, such as the current privatization scheme of public sector entities. The government intends to privatize 24 organizations, beginning with organizations such as Pakistan International Airlines and Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited in the initial phase. Additionally, legislators were briefed on the forthcoming poverty survey, which is set to be published before the end of the year, after the previous survey in 2018, which indicated that 21.9% of Pakistan’s population lived under the poverty line.
These initiatives form part of Pakistan’s overall economic initiatives to raise tax compliance and enhance public sector efficiency.
