The meeting focused on Pakistan’s efforts to eradicate polio, with Sharif appreciating the foundation’s support and Gates acknowledging Pakistan’s efforts while stressing the importance of protecting future generations from the disease.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Bill Gates, Chairman of the Gates Foundation, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, September 22. The meeting focused primarily on Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to eradicate polio and the continued support provided by the Gates Foundation to strengthen the country’s polio eradication programme.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appreciated the Gates Foundation for its sustained assistance to Pakistan’s efforts to eliminate polio. He acknowledged the foundation’s contribution to national vaccination campaigns and other initiatives aimed at preventing the spread of the disease and protecting children from its long-term health impacts.
Sharif also highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its polio eradication efforts and ensuring that children across the country are protected from the disease. The prime minister’s acknowledgement comes as Pakistan continues to work with international partners and health organisations to address challenges associated with polio transmission and vaccination.
Bill Gates, meanwhile, acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts toward polio eradication and stressed the importance of protecting future generations from the disease. His remarks underscored the significance of continued cooperation between Pakistan and international partners in supporting vaccination and public-health initiatives.
The meeting took place as world leaders gathered in New York for the high-level General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The General Debate opened on Tuesday and brought together leaders and senior representatives from around the world for a week of speeches, bilateral meetings and diplomatic engagements.
The General Debate is scheduled to continue through Saturday before concluding on Monday, September 28. The annual gathering provides an important platform for member states to discuss international developments, global challenges and priorities for multilateral cooperation.
This year’s UN General Assembly is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is also scheduled to present his annual report on the organisation’s activities at the opening of the General Debate, outlining key developments and priorities for the United Nations.
