The federal government has decided to remove the Rs. 35 monthly PTV fee that has long been included in electricity bills. This step will effectively halt the monthly collection of around Rs. 1.5 billion that was previously used to fund PTV employee salaries. A formal notification on this decision is expected to be issued shortly.
At the same time, there’s some relief for electricity consumers as well. NEPRA – National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has approved a Rs. 1.50 per unit reduction in the base electricity tariff. Once implemented, the average tariff for power distribution companies will come down to Rs. 34 per unit.
NEPRA has already forwarded its decision to the federal government, and the formal notification will follow after the final call on subsidy arrangements. These developments could offer a bit of financial breathing room for households, especially at a time when energy costs have been a significant burden.
