Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) has taken a major step to modernise higher education by making a three-credit-hour Artificial Intelligence (AI) course mandatory in every undergraduate and postgraduate degree programme across the country starting from the 2026 academic session. The directive applies to all public and private sector universities, which must integrate the compulsory AI curriculum without delay into their existing academic structures.
Universities can offer the AI course as an elective, interdisciplinary subject, or supporting course tailored to individual degree programmes, giving flexibility while ensuring core AI concepts reach every student. HEC described the move as essential in today’s rapidly evolving global landscape where AI plays a transformative role across industries. “In the fast-changing landscape of the 21st century, Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a revolutionary force,” the commission said, underscoring the goal of equipping students with practical AI skills and knowledge relevant to their professional fields.
By embedding AI literacy into academic curricula nationwide, HEC aims to prepare Pakistan’s future workforce to compete globally in technology-driven sectors and enhance students’ academic and career success.
