Pakistan’s first Chinese-designed Hangor-class submarine is slated to enter active duty in 2026, according to Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf. Speaking to China’s Global Times, he said the $5 billion agreement for eight submarines is “on track,” with three already launched from China’s Yangtze River this year.
Calling the program a “significant step forward,” Admiral Ashraf said it will expand Pakistan’s undersea capabilities and local know-how through technology transfer at Karachi Shipyard. Four submarines will be produced in China, and four will be assembled in Pakistan by 2028.
He noted that the addition of Chinese-built Type 054A/P frigates has already bolstered naval defense and anti-submarine operations in the North Arabian Sea.
Describing China as a “reliable partner,” Admiral Ashraf said the cooperation extends beyond defense hardware to “shared strategic goals and innovation.” With Pakistan buying over 60% of China’s exported arms since 2020, this alliance isn’t just afloat—it’s plunging into new depths.
