In a recent closed-door briefing, the Ministry of IT and Telecom Pakistan shared key updates on Pakistan’s digital progress. IT exports have reached 3.8 billion dollars, with freelancers earning 700 million dollars, a 91 percent jump from last year. The new Pakistan Digital Authority is being set up to help transform sectors like health, education, and agriculture through digital tools.
Skills training is another major focus. Over 300,000 people are already enrolled in training programs, with a goal of reaching one million. The government also wants to make high-speed internet more affordable and accessible. Only 14 percent of towers are currently connected to fiber, and plans are in place to change that by improving international connections and expanding local fiber coverage.
On the infrastructure side, Right-of-Way fees have been removed in Islamabad. Similar changes are expected across the country through coordination with the National Highway Authority and Railways. The government is also making it easier for satellite internet providers to enter the market through simpler licensing and a new open space policy.
The 5G spectrum auction is planned for December 2025. It is expected to bring in more investment, create jobs, and boost exports. While there are still issues like power shortages, high taxes, and limited fiber access, the government says these challenges are being worked on to help Pakistan fully move into the next phase of its digital future.
