The National Big Data Portal was officially launched this week by the Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary. Developed by LUMS with support from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the platform is seen as a turning point in Pakistan’s journey toward a data-driven future.

According to the Minister, the portal is more than just a tool; it reflects a national shift toward making data a central part of governance, innovation, and public service delivery. With reliable, accessible data now in one place, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and even everyday citizens can use it to develop smarter solutions.

He acknowledged the country’s existing challenges, like fragmented data systems and limited capacity, but emphasized that the answer lies in using data proactively to shape better outcomes. From forecasting water shortages to managing city traffic, the goal is to apply data for real-world impact.

The launch is part of broader efforts under the 5Es Framework and includes milestones such as the digital census and Pakistan’s sovereign cloud infrastructure. The Minister also announced “Quantum Valley Pakistan,” a hub for advanced tech and research. He called on universities and the youth to lead the way in applying data for development.
