Internet quality across Pakistan is expected to improve by October, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafizur Rehman told a Senate committee on Monday amid concerns over poor service and disruptions in Lahore and other areas.
The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan.
Members of the committee raised concerns about the availability and quality of internet and telecom services. The committee chairperson said internet signals were unavailable in Lahore and linked a recent disruption to a power outage.
The complaints come as telecom operators continue to expand and upgrade their networks, alongside the ongoing rollout of 5G services across Pakistan.
During the meeting, Senator Kamran Murtaza questioned whether the ongoing merger between Ufone and Telenor Pakistan was contributing to problems with telecom services.
PTA Chairman Hafizur Rehman said the merger process was underway. He also said that the rollout of 5G services was currently in progress.
The chairman’s statement on expected improvements by October comes as the country’s telecom sector undergoes several changes, including the expansion of next-generation mobile services and the consolidation of existing operators.
The PTA is responsible for regulating telecommunications services in Pakistan, including overseeing operators and monitoring service-related matters. Concerns over connectivity and network performance have been raised by users and lawmakers in different parts of the country.
The committee’s discussion focused on the service disruptions reported in Lahore and other areas, with members seeking clarification from the regulator about the reasons behind the problems and the expected timeline for improvement.
The ongoing Ufone-Telenor merger was also raised in the context of telecom service quality. The transaction involves the integration of Telenor Pakistan’s operations with Ufone, while the PTA continues to oversee the regulatory aspects of the process.
At the same time, mobile operators are proceeding with the deployment of 5G services following the start of the first phase of the rollout. The PTA has established rollout requirements for operators as they expand next-generation connectivity.
According to the PTA chairman, internet quality across Pakistan is expected to improve by October. The authority is therefore expected to continue monitoring network performance and developments across the telecom sector as operators work through the ongoing merger and 5G rollout.
The committee meeting provided an update on the regulator’s position as lawmakers continued to seek answers over connectivity issues affecting users in Lahore and elsewhere.
