
Twitch sparks outrage as Amazon uses creators’ content to train AI by default, leaving streamers questioning consent and transparency despite opt-out options.
Twitch, the Amazon-owned streaming giant, is under fire after revealing that creators’ content is automatically used to train Amazon’s generative AI models unless they manually opt out. The announcement, reported by BBC, has sparked outrage among streamers who argue the default setting undermines their consent.
Chief Product Officer Mike Minton admitted during a livestream: “If it’s opt-in, nobody would opt-in. That’s the honest answer.” His candid remark fueled criticism, with one streamer calling the move “criminal” and another lamenting that Twitch missed an “opportunity to set an industry standard” against forced data collection.
Generative AI, which powers tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, creates new content from existing data. Twitch explained that user audio could be used to refine speech-to-text models, improving subtitles across Amazon platforms. However, creators worry about broader implications, especially for game developers whose titles are streamed extensively.
Mary Kish, Twitch’s head of community, walked viewers through disabling the feature via channel settings. Yet some users reported the toggle reactivating itself, raising concerns about transparency. Kish acknowledged the frustration, saying: “We don’t expect you to be happy or excited about this.”
The backlash highlights growing unease over tech companies’ reliance on user-generated content to fuel AI development. While Amazon insists data won’t be resold, uncertainty remains about how much has already been collected. Twitch’s chat during the livestream was flooded with comments rejecting the practice, with one viewer stating: “Nobody wants to feed AI with our creativity and content.”
Amazon acquired Twitch in 2014 for nearly $1 billion and has since invested heavily in AI to compete with rivals like Google and Meta. But this controversy underscores the tension between innovation and user trust—an issue likely to intensify as AI adoption expands.
