Pakistan’s drug testing lab gains WHO prequalification status. The move strengthens global recognition and local pharmaceutical capacity.
Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan has achieved a major milestone as its Central Drugs Laboratory in Karachi secures prequalification from the World Health Organization, aligning its testing capabilities with global standards.
Officials said the certification confirms that laboratory procedures meet strict international benchmarks for evaluating the safety, quality and effectiveness of medicines.
Drap CEO Dr Obaidullah Malik stated, “It shows that Pakistan has fixed all the loopholes and our tests will be accepted across the world,” adding that reliance on overseas testing facilities will now decline.
He noted that the recognition allows Pakistan to serve as a testing hub for medicines used in global health programmes, extending beyond domestic needs.
Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal described the development as “a historic moment,” saying it strengthens public health safeguards while boosting the country’s pharmaceutical sector.
Separately, the government approved a national vaccine policy aimed at supporting local production and creating a unified framework for vaccine development and distribution.
