Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday launched a provincewide e-taxi scheme, positioning it as a cornerstone of the government’s push to build an “e-mobility ecosystem”.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the chief minister announced that 1,100 electric taxis would be provided at subsidised rates, with a 30 per cent quota reserved for women. “Punjab has become the first province to launch an e-taxi scheme… it will also open up employment opportunities,” she said, adding that more than 30pc of beneficiaries were women.
Under the scheme, the government will provide up to Rs4 billion in subsidies for the vehicles. Of the required 30pc down payment, the provincial government will cover 15pc, while for women beneficiaries it will bear 60pc of the down payment cost. Maryam Nawaz said applicants could obtain a vehicle with an initial payment of Rs690,000.
She added that the initiative complements existing green transport projects, including electric buses, and reiterated plans to expand modern transport services to all 148 tehsils of Punjab.
According to the Transport and Mass Transit Department, the programme marks a step toward clean mobility, job creation, and more inclusive transport access across the province.
