Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday described the granting of a commercial licence to Raqami Islamic Digital Bank as a major milestone for Pakistan’s evolving financial sector and a meaningful step toward deepening Pakistan-Kuwait economic ties.
Speaking at the award ceremony, the prime minister stressed that strong political relations must be matched by robust economic engagement. Sustainable partnerships, he said, depend on trade, investment, and financial collaboration. Referring to Pakistan and Kuwait as brotherly countries, he noted that decades of close cultural and political relations now need to translate into stronger economic cooperation.
Mr Sharif congratulated Raqami Islamic Digital Bank on becoming Pakistan’s third licensed digital retail bank and expressed confidence that it would promote financial inclusion, innovation, and Shariah-compliant banking. He added that digital Islamic banking could help modernise Pakistan’s financial ecosystem while remaining aligned with Islamic principles.
The Kuwaiti ambassador termed the licensing a practical expression of the deep-rooted relationship between the two countries and reiterated Kuwait’s interest in expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and financial services.
Raqami Chairman Abdullah Al-Mutairi thanked the government and the State Bank of Pakistan for their support, while CEO Umair Ajaz said the bank aims to deliver fully Shariah-compliant digital banking focused on accessibility, efficiency, and improved customer experience.
