Naver announced it will discontinue its fan translation platform, Webtoon Translate, on November 26 due to unsustainable operations.

WEBTOON Entertainment, a subsidiary of NAVER Corp, has announced it will shut down Webtoon Translate, its fan translation platform, on November 26. This marks the end of nearly a decade of community driven translation efforts that helped bring Korean comics to global readers.

According to Webtoon Entertainment, all translation data will be permanently deleted after the shutdown, and users have been advised to download their work before the closure. The company said the service had become “increasingly unsustainable” to maintain and evolve.

“Over the years, the Fan Translation Service has connected passionate fans who volunteered their time and talent to make the series accessible across languages,” a Webtoon official told The Korea Herald. “However, maintaining and evolving this platform has become increasingly unsustainable.”

Launched officially in 2019 after a beta version in 2015, Webtoon Translate enabled fans to translate popular Korean webtoons such as Tower of God and Kubera into over 30 languages, including English, Japanese, and Chinese. It also served as a stepping stone for aspiring translators to become officially recognized by Webtoon.

While the decision marks the end of a fan-favorite initiative, Naver says it plans to “prioritise investments in areas where we can have the greatest impact,” signaling a shift toward more centralized content translation efforts.
