The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved 235 million dollars in financing for the Lahore Water and Wastewater Management Project, aimed at improving water quality and reducing pollution from untreated sewage.
The funding will support the Lahore Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA Lahore) in strengthening its services and becoming more financially stable. The project will focus on ensuring safe drinking water, reducing wastewater overflow, and replacing old pipelines that cause major losses and contamination.
The plan includes diverting water from the Banbawala Ravi Bedian Depalpur (BRBD) Canal and building a new surface water treatment plant (SWTP). It also targets reducing non-revenue water from 45 percent to below 20 percent.
Another key goal is full water metering across Lahore. Currently, nearly 90 percent of water connections are unmetered, leading to waste and theft. The project will install meters, improve billing, and train staff to manage new facilities efficiently.
