Pakistan’s Smart Non‑Chip CNICs Bring Big Benefits

Pakistan’s National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA), headed by Chairman Lt Gen Muhammad Munir Afsar, has introduced a new non‑chip Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) that combines affordability with smart capabilities. The new CNIC now features a QR code for easy identity verification through the Pak ID mobile app, in addition to bilingual Urdu and English text, making it identical to other official documents such as passports.

These new cards provide lifetime validity for both organ donors, who are registered and given a special symbol, and individuals with disabilities, who are provided with unique markers. NADRA has also optimized delivery times: standard processing is 31 days (PKR 400), urgent 15 days (PKR 1,150), and executive 9 days (PKR 2,150), and first-time 18-year-olds are issued their CNICs free under the regular service.

By dechiping the embedded chip but keeping core smart functionalities, NADRA provides affordable digital identity solutions to millions. This drive fosters inclusivity, convenience, and national integration, being a major milestone in Pakistan’s digital governance drive.
