TPL Properties Finds Gas Pocket in Karachi

TPL Properties has uncovered an underground gas pocket during an initial site investigation at its Korangi Creek development. The discovery happened while drilling a test well for water exploration.

Preliminary assessments by independent industry experts suggest the gas is shallow biogenic methane, a naturally occurring gas formed from organic material decomposition. Since the site isn’t part of a known natural gas reservoir, experts believe the gas pocket will naturally dissipate if the flame continues to burn.

A plot in Korangi Creek has been sealed off after a fire, ignited by the gas release, has been burning for six days. Despite fire tenders being present, operations were paused due to extreme temperatures. Authorities have confirmed that no gas infrastructure is nearby, and monitoring efforts are ongoing.

TPL clarified that this finding is part of extensive studies conducted over the past two years to ensure responsible development. These studies include environmental impact assessments and geotechnical surveys, all carried out with regulatory approvals.
