Telenor Pakistan has launched QR-enabled SmartShops, a new initiative aimed at digitizing modern trade and unconventional retail touchpoints across the country. This step is part of Telenor Pakistan’s broader push to expand digital payment acceptance beyond traditional channels and support the growth of Pakistan’s digital economy.
The SmartShops programme enables retailers, especially those in smaller, non-traditional outlets — to accept QR code payments seamlessly, allowing customers to pay using mobile wallets and digital banking apps. The solution is designed to help merchants reduce cash handling costs, drive faster transactions, and expand their customer base by tapping into Pakistan’s growing base of digital payment users.
According to Telenor Pakistan, SmartShops will empower kiryana stores, boutiques, and service providers to transact digitally without requiring full point-of-sale hardware, leveraging smartphones and simple QR codes to onboard merchants quickly. The company believes this will improve financial inclusion, deepen digital financial literacy and accelerate nationwide adoption of digital payments.
By bridging the gap between modern trade and informal retail outlets, Telenor Pakistan is positioning SmartShops as a scalable tool to support Pakistan’s continued shift towards a cash-lite economy.
