SpaceX is set to acquire Cursor, an AI code-generation startup co-founded by Pakistani-born Sualeh Asif, in a $60 billion deal. The acquisition underscores the growing influence of AI in software development and highlights Asif’s inspiring journey from Karachi to MIT.
Cursor, an AI startup specializing in automated code generation, is on track for a $60 billion acquisition by SpaceX. The company was co-founded by Karachi-born Sualeh Asif, who studied at MIT after representing Pakistan in the International Math Olympiad. SpaceX confirmed it has secured rights to purchase Cursor later this year, with a fallback clause requiring a $10 billion payment if the acquisition does not proceed.
Cursor has quickly risen to prominence alongside OpenAI and Anthropic, attracting millions of developers by simplifying coding tasks. The collaboration with SpaceX will merge Cursor’s advanced platform with SpaceX’s Colossus supercomputer, aiming to create some of the most powerful AI models yet.
Asif previously co-founded Anysphere at MIT, which developed Cursor, now generating over $1 billion in annualized revenue. The company is used by more than 50,000 enterprises, including Nvidia, Adobe, Uber, and Shopify. Former IT minister Umar Saif praised Asif as a role model for Pakistani youth, emphasizing his self-made success. Cursor’s valuation had already reached $29.3 billion in late 2025, making this acquisition one of the largest in AI history and a milestone for both Silicon Valley and Pakistan’s tech talent.
