Skype is a communication platform for voice calls, video calls, and messaging. Launched in 2003, it supports personal and business use with features like screen sharing, file sharing, and group chats across multiple devices.
The company has encouraged current users to switch to Teams, guaranteeing a smooth transfer of their data, contacts, and conversations. In an official blog post, Microsoft announced, “To simplify our free consumer communication services and better meet customer needs, we will retire Skype in May 2025 to prioritize Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communication and collaboration platform.”
Before the May 5, 2025 deadline, users can migrate to Teams with their Skype credentials for automatic data transfer or export their chats, contacts, and call history. Paid Skype services are closed to new users, but existing subscribers can use their credits and plans until their next renewal. After the deadline, paid users can access the Dial Pad via the Skype web portal or Teams. Microsoft has prioritized Teams since its 2017 launch, with its popularity surging during the Covid-19 pandemic as a comprehensive communication solution.
