Punjab plans a cyber crime unit to tackle online harassment, offering mobile response, virtual complaints, and stronger protections for women and children.
The Punjab government has approved the establishment of a dedicated cyber crime unit to address online harassment, particularly targeting women and children.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired a meeting where key measures were approved to counter harassment and blackmail on digital platforms. The proposed Punjab Cyber Crime Unit will provide immediate and secure assistance to victims, aiming to improve access to support services.
As part of the initiative, a mobile unit will be introduced to reach affected individuals directly, eliminating the need for women and children to visit police stations. Authorities will also enable complaint registration through a virtual police station and the PKM application.
The government has assured that victims’ identities will remain strictly confidential. In addition, new legislation is being considered to introduce stricter penalties for cyber offenders.
Officials described cyber crime as a growing challenge, particularly for vulnerable groups using digital platforms. The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen legal and institutional mechanisms to address online abuse.
The chief minister emphasised the importance of safeguarding younger generations and ensuring a secure digital environment through proactive enforcement and support systems.
