Punjab will distribute 100,000 subsidised e-bikes to students within a year, expanding its green transport initiative with interest-free instalment plans.
The Government of Punjab has announced a major expansion of its electric bike programme, with plans to distribute 100,000 e-bikes to students across the province over the next year as part of its broader green mobility strategy.
The decision was approved during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Maryam Nawaz. Under the scheme, the provincial government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 for each e-bike to make the vehicles more affordable for students.
According to the plan, male students will pay a down payment of Rs14,000, while the remaining amount will be repaid through interest-free monthly instalments of Rs2,100. Female students will receive additional support, with the Punjab government covering both the down payment and registration fee. They will only be required to pay the same interest-free monthly instalment of Rs2,100.
During the meeting, the chief minister also directed officials to introduce more flexible and accessible instalment plans to encourage wider participation among eligible students.
The programme has also been expanded beyond students. Government employees across Punjab will now be able to purchase e-bikes through similar easy instalment plans, broadening access to environmentally friendly transportation.
The initiative forms part of the provincial government’s wider strategy to promote sustainable and electric mobility. Alongside the e-bike programme, Punjab is moving forward with plans to introduce additional electric buses, e-taxis and electric three-wheelers to strengthen environmentally friendly public transport across the province.
Officials also briefed the chief minister on the progress of ongoing mass transit projects and efforts to expand electric public transport infrastructure. The government aims to reduce reliance on conventional fuel-powered vehicles while improving affordable mobility options for students, employees and commuters.
The expansion reflects Punjab’s continued focus on supporting cleaner transportation through financial incentives and accessible financing. By combining government subsidies with interest-free instalment plans, the initiative seeks to encourage greater adoption of electric vehicles while contributing to lower transport costs and reduced emissions.
The e-bike programme is expected to play a key role in the province’s broader vision of developing a more sustainable transport system and accelerating the transition towards electric mobility.
