PM announces electric bikes for government employees’ instalments as Pakistan pushes EV adoption and aims to cut fuel imports.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a plan to provide electric bikes to government employees up to BPS-16 on easy instalments as part of efforts to promote electric vehicle adoption.
The initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting focused on advancing the country’s transition to electric mobility. Officials informed the prime minister that the government aims to shift 30% of vehicles to electric power within the next five years, a move expected to save approximately $4.5 billion in fuel imports.
The prime minister directed authorities to accelerate ongoing initiatives under the National Electric Vehicle Policy and emphasised the importance of transparency in the distribution of subsidies for electric motorbikes.
Officials shared that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, along with four certificates for electric cars. Additionally, 123 applications have been received for the installation of EV charging stations across the country.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to reduce reliance on imported fuel, improve energy security, and support environmental sustainability through cleaner transportation solutions.
