In collaboration with China, Pakistan is preparing to harness Gwadar’s marine resources. The chairman for China Overseas Ports Holding Company Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd. – (COPHC), Professor Yu Bo laid out plans to build a modern, tech-driven aquaculture industry in the port city while meeting with Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.
The project will seek to create an advanced aquaculture hub for seafood farming, processing, and export. The minister considers it a transformative decision for coastal development, promising jobs, investment, and a means to uplift to the local economy. He guaranteed the government’s support, in everything from infrastructure to utilities, to help new industries grow in the region.
With Gwadar’s ideal sea conditions and its prime location near international markets, both sides see beneficial export potential. Plans include hatcheries, sustainable farms, and processing units that meet global standards. The initiative also aligns with Pakistan’s broader goal to unlock its ‘blue economy’, enhancing food security and exports.
The two countries will be working with technical teams and government departments to refine policy and execution to take this step toward sustainable growth, and potentially landing Gwadar the seafood capital tag in the region.
