

Suparco officially named Pakistan’s first lunar rover Jinnah-1, selected from 4,000 public proposals, set to join China’s Chang’e-8 mission to the Moon’s south pole in 2029.
Pakistan has taken a step toward the stars, and it carries the name of its founder. The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) announced on August 13 that Pakistan’s first lunar rover has been officially named Jinnah-1, honouring Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and symbolising, in Suparco’s own words, “Pakistan’s resolve, progress and new space horizons.”
The name was selected from 4,000 proposals submitted during a nationwide public competition. Seven participants had independently proposed the name Jinnah-1, and the final winner was determined through a lucky draw. That winner was Tayyab Karim, a 17-year-old from Bahawalnagar, who was formally recognised at a ceremony held in Islamabad.
The rover is scheduled to travel to the Moon in 2029 as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission, which is targeting the lunar south pole, one of the most scientifically compelling and strategically contested destinations in current space exploration.
Jinnah-1 will study plasma, radiation, and the lunar surface’s geology, and conduct experiments related to the prospects of future human presence on the Moon.
The Moon’s south pole has become the new frontier of the global space race. NASA is targeting 2028 for the first crewed landing at the south pole as part of its Artemis IV mission, in a race against China’s own crewed Chang’e programme for the same region.
India made history in 2023 when its Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully landed an unmanned craft near the south pole, becoming only the fourth country to achieve a soft lunar landing and the first to reach that specific region.
Pakistan’s collaboration with China’s Chang’e-8 mission was first announced by Suparco in 2024. At that time, the agency described it as “a significant milestone for Pakistan’s space programme, as Suparco’s indigenous rover will be part of the mission to explore the lunar surface.”
The naming of Jinnah-1 now gives that milestone a face, a story, and a 17-year-old from Bahawalnagar who will forever be part of Pakistan’s space history.
As the space race accelerates between global powers and emerging nations alike, Pakistan’s presence on the Moon’s south pole in 2029 will mark the country’s most significant scientific achievement in space since the launch of Badr-1, its first satellite, in 1990. A nation that began its space journey over three decades ago is preparing to leave its mark on the Moon.
