Pakistan has approved a series of major development initiatives worth more than $1.5 billion aimed at accelerating artificial intelligence, satellite technology, and railway modernization.
Pakistan has taken another step toward modernizing its economy by approving a new portfolio of high-value development projects focused on emerging technologies, transport infrastructure, and space capabilities.
The Central Development Working Party (CDWP), chaired by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, cleared 15 development projects worth Rs34.74 billion while recommending nine larger projects valued at Rs431.02 billion (over $1.5 billion) to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for final approval.
A significant portion of the investment is directed toward strengthening Pakistan’s digital ecosystem. Among the proposed initiatives are a National Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem Development Program (NAIEDP), a GEO-AI Development and Innovation Hub, a Robotics Center of Excellence, and an Emerging Technologies Data Center. Together, these projects aim to build local expertise in artificial intelligence, robotics, advanced data infrastructure, and geospatial technologies.
The development package also includes Pakistan Communication Satellite-2 (PakSat-2), which is expected to enhance the country’s communication infrastructure, improve satellite-based services, and support applications ranging from navigation to disaster management.
Alongside digital transformation, the government is continuing efforts to modernize its transportation network. One of the largest infrastructure projects approved is the upgrade of the 996-kilometer ML-3 railway corridor connecting Rohri, Sibi, Quetta, and Koh-e-Taftan. Improving this railway section is expected to strengthen passenger and freight movement while enhancing regional trade connectivity.
According to the Planning Ministry, the projects align with the government’s long-term development agenda under the URAAN Pakistan initiative, which prioritizes innovation, digital transformation, infrastructure modernization, and sustainable economic growth.
According to the Planning Ministry, the proposed projects are closely aligned with the government’s long-term development vision under the URAAN Pakistan initiative, which focuses on accelerating innovation, digital transformation, modern infrastructure, and sustainable economic growth. The initiative aims to strengthen Pakistan’s technological capabilities, improve public service delivery, and create a more competitive economy by investing in future-oriented development.
During the meeting, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal stressed that strategic investments in advanced technology and modern infrastructure are critical to enhancing Pakistan’s global competitiveness and driving its transition toward a knowledge-based economy. He noted that such investments would support economic resilience, improve productivity, and generate new opportunities for innovation-led growth.
If approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), the proposed portfolio would represent one of Pakistan’s most significant coordinated investments in digital innovation, strategic infrastructure, and future-ready public development, laying the foundation for long-term economic transformation.
