Netflix announces plans to prohibit password sharing

Much to the dismay of fans of the streaming service, Netflix recently announced that it is going to test a new feature that will restrict people to share their passwords with others. Although Netflix clearly prohibits password sharing in its terms and conditions but we all know that almost every user ends up sharing their password with people around them.

As per the statement released by the streaming service giant, over the next several weeks, it will begin prompting a portion of its users that share their accounts outside of their immediate household to pay an extra fee in order to continue doing so.

The statement read, “Members on our Standard and Premium plans will be able to add sub-accounts for up to two people they don’t live with — each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login, and password — at a lower price”.

The good news, for now, is that the sub-account test is limited to only a few countries including Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. Although this doesn’t indicate that the feature will not be extended to other parts of the world but currently the streaming service doesn’t have any plans on including more countries on the list. The last time Netflix decided to address the unregulated practice of account sharing was in March 2021 when it forced users to verify if they had ownership over an account.

So it’s probably time to prepare for some hard conversations around password sharing. Best of luck!
